      Frans Anton Schmidt (zoon van J. Bernhard Schmidt 1796*1873 en Maria Balzer 1809-1886 ; gehuwd in 1832) geboren in 1836 te Schmallenberg Sauerland)trok voor het eerst op 16-jarige leeftijd naar Nederland. In Groningen trad hij in dienst van de f firma Niekus als reizend handelaar met kiep (kiepkerel) en reisde in het rayon Hoogezand-Veendam-Meeden. Jaarlijks rond kerst keerde hij terug naar zijn ouders. In 1861 ging hij zelfstandig als kiepkerel werken met als standplaats Wildervank. Op 28-2-1864 trouwde Anton in Schmallenberg met Maria Anne Cloidt (Kloidt, Kloodt, Kloot). Maria bleef daar eerst wonen, maar reisde later in dat jaar Anton achterna naar Wildervank zonder dat hij hier vanaf wist. Uit het huwelijk kwamen negen kiinderen voort. OP 3 juni 1873 kocht Anton op een publieke verkoping een behuizing te Wildervank, aan het Oosterdiep, dat als winkel in gebruik werd genomen. Maria runde de winkel terwijl Anton als kiepkerel werkzaam bleef. De zaken gingen zo goed dat in 1881 een machinale breimachine werd aangeschaft. Van het een kwam het andere, en de fabriek ontstond. Op 26-8-1894 stierf Maria. OP 7 oktober 1912 overleed Anton.
